Ellis Peak Hike : Ellis Peak hike although not on the Tahoe Rim Trail is a very worthy hike for both mid level and experienced hikers. The first mile is very very strenuous and will get your heart at max rates, the climb starts at 7,200 feet and climbs to 8,100 feet in the first mile! when you reach the first pass the views are spectacular and some of the best views on any hike i have attempted so far. Most day hikers turn around here and go on back down after admiring the views and looking over the steep cliffs either side of the trail( 1,000 feet drops). The trail then descends over the next mile to 7,800 and you arrive at Ellis lake a very serene place with high rock walls surrounding the lake. This is another turn around point and hike back or you can ascend Ellis peak, 7,800 feet to 8,740 feet in the next mile, again extremely strenuous at these elevations, when you get to the summit the views of Lake Tahoe are spectacular you can see the whole lake, not many vantage points where you can see the whole lake from shore to shore. This is 3.5 miles out and the return is back along the same route, its quite difficult getting back up again after such a strenuous hike but the views are rewarding and the accomplishment satisfying.

Mt Tallac : This hike will test the fittest hikers, you start at 6,500ft and ascend to 9,700ft over 5 miles, two very aggressive sections that ascend very steeply over rock and shale, you will need a few stops to get up these sections(I needed quite a few). Great vistas of Tahoe when you get to the top although rivaled by Ellis peak which is an easier climb( still has some aggressive sections). Great hike that you will never forget but i will not be returning any time soon, many climbers were first timers, giving us an indication that this is not a hike you would repeat regularly. Great climb but very challenging.

Twin Peaks Hike : This Hike is strenuous if you hike from Tahoe City to Twin Peaks and back down via Stanford rock in a anti-clockwise circle. You start on the Tahoe Rim Trail( Tahoe City) at 6,400 ft and ascend for the first 6 miles to 8,700ft on Double Black Trails. The way down is easy but over 7 miles and ends at a small stream that you need to wade through to get back to the start point. Great hike 5-6 hours and 13 miles around. Easier if navigated clockwise as the climb at the start is more gradual, all of the other hikers we passed ( around 6) were hiking the opposite direction, now i know why!
